Empath Week, Day 4: With A Little Help From My Friends

Happy Thursday, Wonderfully Witchy people!

My Goddess! We’re more than halfway through Empath Week! How y’all feeling? And how’s everyone else feeling? (Haha! Empath joke.)

I’m not going to lie to you: today’s topic is something I’ve struggled with my whole life. Even as a child, I generally preferred to find a way to solve my own problems than reach out to someone else for help. So here it is, an uncomfortable truth:

An empath might joyfully, eagerly, and skillfully help others but be reluctant to ask for help, themselves.

Maybe you’re wondering why that is. Maybe you recognize yourself in that statement. Well, there could be a multitude of reasons for someone’s reluctance to ask for help: a fear of seeming vulnerable or helpless; a desire to appear competent, in control, or unflappable; a wounded belief that you are not deserving of help or that help does not exist.

It’s okay if any or all of those things are true for you. They are all, to different extents, true for me. Even admitting that is kind of difficult (thanks, Ego!)

Human emotions are complex, and empaths have a unique window into that experience. I often identify empaths with Chiron, the Wounded Healer archetype. So many of us have, at one point or another, received invalidating messages about our intense feelings. As a result, we can’t bear for someone else to go through the same (or to risk ourselves repeating the experience with someone else!) This means that we can easily find ourselves healing others and being afraid to ask for the same healing from someone else.

Listen: we don’t have to do that, empaths.


Empath Affirmation: I gratefully ask for and receive all the help I need.

The important thing for us to remember is that there is help out there for us. Whether it’s a friend, family member, self-help book, reiki healer, shaman, workshop, personal therapist, support group, or guided meditation, we have a right to seek out and receive help. It’s okay to ask for it, to need it, to seek it: everyone does.

So, don’t worry or be too hard on yourself for needing help: you got this! And if you don’t, ask someone to get it for you 😉
